Bill C-234: Extension of the exemption for qualifying farming fuel to marketable natural gas and propane – Updated cost estimate

Published on September 15, 2023

The PBO has updated the cost of C-234.

PBO has updated[^1] its estimate of the cost of C-234[^2] by:

  • Expanding the estimation to include the Atlantic provinces,[^3]
  • and, using new projections of natural gas and propane used in agriculture (by province) provided by Environment and Climate Change Canada.[^4]

PBO continues to use the assumption that the total projected usage of natural gas and propane by farmers are eligible for the carbon pricing exemption, as a very small portion of these fuels have been assigned for personal use.
